Nerves That Fire Together, Wire Together — More detox tips (that can used anywhere in your life!)

neuronsthatfiretogetherThe first few days of a detox (or any change) can be challenging, but if you prepared yourself well (as in, you decreased the amount of caffeine and started to take out the junk prior to the start of the detox) you can avoid some of the reactions your body can have. It is normal (though not automatic) to experience headaches, fatigue or aches at first. These should pass within a day or so. The more you adhere to the meal plan, the better you will feel. I predict that by day 3-4 you’ll be feeling so good you will be grateful to your body (and yourself) for ditching the garbage and pushing it out of your body! The detox reactions will be quickly forgotten, and your blood sugar (as well as your moods) will be stable and energy higher.

The same goes for any change you want to make — the first few days are the hardest. If you’re trying to quit an addiction, I tell my patients, the first few days are physical. The next part is mental and emotional. Once you get over the physical cravings of cigarettes, sugar or salt addictions, for example, the goal now is to tackle your mindset!

Here are some detox tips that will impact all parts of your life — whether or not you are detoxing.

Today, let’s think about choosing your focus: health, vibrancy, change, weight loss — whatever it means for you to be doing this, and repeat that to yourself all day long–along with your mantra, of course (see last week’s post). Focus on the benefits, not the deprivation. This will also change your attitude about life.

There’s a saying in neurobiology: neurons that fire together, wire together. That means that the more you think about certain things, the more you will enforce that in your mind – physically! You will literally be create a bigger “nerve bundle” in your brain that reinforces that habit. So, what are you wiring in there? Is it health, positivity, excitement for the changes? Or is it deprivation, annoyance, and focus on the negatives? What you think about will be what you live. Change your thoughts, change your life. (THAT would be a great mantra, by the way!)

Ask yourself this: where are you letting outside circumstances dictate how you are experiencing your life? What can you shift or let go of so that you can create the health you want? Who are you making choices for: you or others, or perhaps your past? Whose idea of how strong and healthy you can be are you believing?

While I believe you should love where you are, there’s also generally room for improvement. It’s a fine line between being ok with where you are and knowing there’s something you want to change. Try to find that balance — because hating where you are (or God, forbid, who you are) will only keep you stuck. Remember, last week I told you you have to love yourself through change. That’s key.

Cinnamon and Astragalus – two powerful substances for health

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Zeylanicum)

Cinnamon – high in antioxidants and helps with blood sugar and weight loss
Cinnamon – high in antioxidants and helps with blood sugar and weight loss

I bet 75% of the world could ID cinnamon by smell alone. That pungent fragrance that brings to mind pumpkin pie, mulled cider, cinnamon rolls, Indian spice markets, and our grandma—it’s delicious and comforting. Guess what? It’s also really good for you! Unlike the other ingredients in the Powerhouse Tea, cinnamon is not a leaf, and therefore is not an herb. It is made from the bark of the cinnamomum tree and is considered a spice. Cinnamon is an amazing natural healer and it:

  • regulates blood sugar
  • is high in antioxidants (It’s the #7th best anti-oxidant herb on the planet!)
  • lowers cholesterol
  • helps with weight loss and digestion
  • inhibits h pylori and other microbes
  • lessens pain and fever
  • regulates hormones
  • reduces chronic inflammation
  • high in many nutrients and fiber

It has an amazing ability to preserve things and to help heal and guard the body against pathogens and aging. In addition to adding it to your powerhouse tea, You can supplement using cinnamon capsules and adding it to many dishes. A recent study showed that cinnamon was one of top 4 herbs to reduce the chance of UTI’s or candida (yeast) (Oregano, another herb in our powerhouse tea, was the number 1 herb, by the way.)

Many studies show that cinnamon improves insulin resistance, helps with weight control, and regulates blood sugar via its high polyphenol (natural antioxidant) count and by stimulating insulin receptors. Because stabilizing blood sugar is key to weight loss, cinnamon is a great supplement for diabetics and hypoglycemics and it also helps you keep your energy level steady throughout the day. Sugar cravings come when blood sugar is low. You feel tired before you realize what’s going on, and so you grab for more quick energy fixes like sugar or carbs. Drinking a tea with cinnamon will help with those peaks and valleys, and will inhibit random food cravings.

While more research is needed, studies show that cinnamon is also effective at inhibiting h pylori bacteria, as well as other pathogens. It also has been shown to reduce inflammatory cytokines (proteins which have an effect on cells or between cells) which means it can lessen pain. Because it contains a compound called cinnamaldehyde, cinnamon seems to reduce menstrual pain and regulate female hormones, thus helping with infertility by increasing progesterone and decreasing testosterone. Showing promise in many neurodegenerative diseases like MS, Parkinsons, Alzheimer’s and meningitis, cinnamon reduces the chronic inflammation linked to these disorders, according to recent studies.

Cinnamon contains more than 80 nutrients, including Vitamins A and C, zinc, calcium iron, and manganese and even some fiber when it’s ground. In fact, it contains 3.6 g of fiber per tablespoon—which is a lot for a spice!

Two kinds of cinnamon:

Most of what you taste or smell today is cassia, but you want ceylon cinnamon. Make sure you’re using the right one.

Besides our tea, there are different ways to use it: Add it to your morning smoothie, use it in desserts, on dishes like chicken (even a dry rub for flank steak), baked apples, and more.

You can also use cinnamon and raw honey as a facemark for acne. Just mix it together and apply to your face, then wash off.

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)

Astragalus - boosts the immune system and slows the effects of aging
Astragalus – boosts the immune system and slows the effects of aging

Unlike the other ingredients in the Powerhouse Tea, you may have never heard of this magical root. Astragalus, when you buy it from an herbalist, comes in large dried slices of the root of the astragalus plant. Even Western medicine is taking notice at last: a growing number of oncologists are recommending astragalus root—either as a tea or a tincture—to revitalize the immune systems in their post-chemo patients. It is powerful medicine and can:

  • boost the immune system
  • enhance strength
  • regulate metabolism
  • act as an adaptogen
  • assist with seasonal allergies
  • help with congestive heart failure and post-stroke damage
  • aid in preventing many serious diseases
  • act to slow the effects of aging

In Chinese medicine we use this herb a lot, mainly to boost the immune system, enhance strength, and regulate metabolism. We use the dried root of the plant,

available at most health food/herbaltores. Known as Huang Qi, it is used as a “qi” tonic. It is known also as an “adaptogen”—it helps the body adapt to stress. Some people label astragalus the “natural flu vaccine” as it builds your immune system.

Studies have shown that it also helps with seasonal allergy symptoms, post-stroke damage, and even helps people with congestive heart failure. The Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine published an article in 2011 recommending moderate doses of astragalus to help with optimal heart contraction after noting a study on patients with congestive heart failure.

A lot of research has come out of China on two chemical compounds of this herb: polysaccarides and saponins. It’s shown to have a role in preventing and treating aplastic anemia, cancer, genital herpes, congestive heart failure, kidney disease, AIDS, lupus, oral herpes, flu and respiratory infections.

And here’s some really exciting news around anti-aging. Telomeres are the “caps” on the end of DNA strands that help protect the chromosome. Every time our cells divide, the telomeres shrink and eventually no longer divide — and our body stops making those cells. Eventually, this leads to aging and death. There’s some good research out there that points to astragalus maintaining the length of telomeres…hence, slowing the aging process.

Now that you know all about the ingredients in the Powerhouse Tea, feel free to delve into the healing and restorative traits of other herbs and spices.

Put Down Roots—How to Connect with Yourself

signs-symptomsMy mom is in a rehab facility right now, after a fall which resulted in a broken hip. According to her insurance policy, she’s eligible for 20 days in rehab. Now they’ve determined—somehow—that she is ready to go home after 15.

5 days is a long time in rehab-land. 5 days plus or minus can make the difference between success — she goes home and can navigate her apartment, cook for herself, get in and out of the shower—and disappointment—where she’s rushed through the system, is not properly rehabilitated, becomes increasingly dependent, and maybe has another fall. It’s a familiar story. Same plot, different details.

I’ll spare you my diatribe about insurance companies. But here’s what my mom has that so many people don’t: an advocate. In this case, me. I am grounded and clear about what she needs, how I’ll speak up on her behalf and to whom, and the fact that I won’t back down. As her advocate I am getting information, supporting her emotionally, and figuring out what’s next.

There are so many people who don’t have advocates. I think about them. Those who don’t know they can appeal. The people who are just too shy or afraid of “making waves.” The people who don’t have any coverage for rehabilitation and so go home to enact a tragic spiral!

But you have someone. You have me. I’m here to support you as you make waves and get your own healthcare needs and desires met.

I would love to see you advocate for yourself, and can help you do that. So you can:

  • ask for alternatives to prescription medication (when applicable)
  • ask for more time with your healthcare providers
  • request the support or therapies that will make all the difference in your health and wellness
  • ask of yourself the sometimes difficult questions like:
    • Am I choosing to not engage in the healing process?
    • Am I being passive or proactive in my health and wellness?
    • Have I accepted the notion that getting older means feeling lousy?
    • Do I want only the absence of big name diseases or do I want full health and vibrancy?

We’ve become programmed to accept that the correct path to wellness is via an 8 minute drive-by appointment with a doc holding a prescription pad. People, like my mother, assume that “doctor knows best” no matter what. Not only is there no instant health pill or magic bullet to get you into your ideal state, but health care and wellness are more about you than your doctor. Don’t abdicate control… seek partnership.

All the above is much easier to achieve when you are grounded and securely rooted in what you want. The first step: pay attention to what your body is telling you. Listen…the signs and signals are there for you.
