Nerves That Fire Together, Wire Together — More detox tips (that can used anywhere in your life!)

neuronsthatfiretogetherThe first few days of a detox (or any change) can be challenging, but if you prepared yourself well (as in, you decreased the amount of caffeine and started to take out the junk prior to the start of the detox) you can avoid some of the reactions your body can have. It is normal (though not automatic) to experience headaches, fatigue or aches at first. These should pass within a day or so. The more you adhere to the meal plan, the better you will feel. I predict that by day 3-4 you’ll be feeling so good you will be grateful to your body (and yourself) for ditching the garbage and pushing it out of your body! The detox reactions will be quickly forgotten, and your blood sugar (as well as your moods) will be stable and energy higher.

The same goes for any change you want to make — the first few days are the hardest. If you’re trying to quit an addiction, I tell my patients, the first few days are physical. The next part is mental and emotional. Once you get over the physical cravings of cigarettes, sugar or salt addictions, for example, the goal now is to tackle your mindset!

Here are some detox tips that will impact all parts of your life — whether or not you are detoxing.

Today, let’s think about choosing your focus: health, vibrancy, change, weight loss — whatever it means for you to be doing this, and repeat that to yourself all day long–along with your mantra, of course (see last week’s post). Focus on the benefits, not the deprivation. This will also change your attitude about life.

There’s a saying in neurobiology: neurons that fire together, wire together. That means that the more you think about certain things, the more you will enforce that in your mind – physically! You will literally be create a bigger “nerve bundle” in your brain that reinforces that habit. So, what are you wiring in there? Is it health, positivity, excitement for the changes? Or is it deprivation, annoyance, and focus on the negatives? What you think about will be what you live. Change your thoughts, change your life. (THAT would be a great mantra, by the way!)

Ask yourself this: where are you letting outside circumstances dictate how you are experiencing your life? What can you shift or let go of so that you can create the health you want? Who are you making choices for: you or others, or perhaps your past? Whose idea of how strong and healthy you can be are you believing?

While I believe you should love where you are, there’s also generally room for improvement. It’s a fine line between being ok with where you are and knowing there’s something you want to change. Try to find that balance — because hating where you are (or God, forbid, who you are) will only keep you stuck. Remember, last week I told you you have to love yourself through change. That’s key.

An Alternative to Botox™- Cosmetic Acupuncture!

“True beauty is not an unmovable face, unnaturally frozen in time. It is a woman who works with her body to bring out its natural radiance and glow, whose smile lights up the room instead of hiding behind a glass wall of paralyzed muscle.” Teri Goetz, LAC, MS, AAC

As a licensed and board certified acupuncturist and herbalist and practitioner of cosmetic acupuncture, I believe that the injection of one of the world’s deadliest neurotoxins into one’s muscles/body for many years can have a quietly negative impact on many of your body’s systems — like your detoxification, nervous and respiratory systems. Our liver and kidneys already have a hefty job to do in dealing with the bombardment of environmental, ingested and applied toxins in every day life. Why add the burden of having to process a neurotoxin, or other types of injectable chemicals, to the long line of things to filter out of the body?

The long term effects of Botox ™ on the nervous system, muscles and even the brain are simply not known and we don’t have long-term studies on it. The risks of permanently atrophying muscles, decreasing normal facial movements (maybe permanently) and negatively impacting the above-mentioned systems seem hardly worth it. In addition, studies indicate the botulinum toxin could possibly attach itself to other cells in the body and migrate. The many reported immediate side-effects will inevitably compound over many years.

Side effects include droopy eyes, confusion, headache, blurry vision, severe muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, diarrhea, stomach pain, dizziness, inflammation of the cornea, fever, sore throat, cough…the list goes on.

Additionally, there is a lot of evidence that people are having Botox™ injected in less than ideal situations – in non-medical settings by unqualified administrators. The Daily Mail reports that in the UK there are many “faux-tox” salons, offering the treatment in “less than sterile” environments. The author adds:

  • Five in six patients don’t know if injections contain Botox™ key ingredient
  • One in ten admit to receiving Botox™ treatment at home or a friend’s home
  • Two-thirds of patients do not think that the industry is properly regulated
  • Leading plastic surgery sees 15 per cent increase in corrective procedures
I am not making a judgment on people who enjoy their Botox ™. I am offering an alternative – one that is healthier overall, and one that will have a big impact on looking naturally younger, healthier and glowing. One that will improve your health and balance, not tax your bodily systems.

An Alternative to Botox – Cosmetic Acupuncture

An alternative to Botox™ (or other injectables) is cosmetic acupuncture, which

  • slows the signs of aging
  • diminishes fine lines and wrinkles
  • improve skin’s elasticity
  • improves color and texture of skin
  • preserves a youthful, healthier appearance
  • reduces sagging
  • evens skin tone
  • reduces puffiness and eye “bags”

As an alternative to Botox ™, cosmetic acupuncture enhances your own body’s resources by stimulating the body’s own anti-aging powers, resulting in younger looking skin. It is deeply relaxing, works on the entire body and also helps to heal causes of premature aging, wrinkles or dull-looking skin. It creates a glow and lifts from the inside out.

Starting early is actually a good thing! It brings balance and healing, helps stop fine lines and habitual muscle contractions from developing into wrinkles. It is great at any age to turn back the hands of time.

The unmovable face is hardly beautiful to me. I think the story of who you are is beautiful. We all want to look our best, and cosmetic acupuncture helps you do just that. Naturally.

Tips for Detoxing

Detoxification to improve your health and lose weight.
Detoxification to improve your health and lose weight.

Detoxing, for the uninitiated, can feel daunting. Where do I start? Which type of detox do I do? What’s the difference between a juice fast and a proper detoxification? There’s a ton of “fad” detoxing out there and a bunch of unhealthy ones, too!

I personally prefer a proper, protein and healthy food filled detoxification. Sure, juicing for a few days here and there can be good, but if you really want to rid yourself of toxic substances in your body, you’re going to need more support than that. You will also need more protein and supplements to fortify you in your detoxification so that you are functioning well and feeling good.

When you get started, you’ll want support—from me, your loved ones, your friends — so ask for it. Most importantly, for this adventure, you need to build your internal muscles of self-love. Ya gotta love yourself right through this. And you can do it. Isn’t it about time?

It can be challenging to start the detox program (or anything new for that matter). Quite honestly, most people don’t have the guts for what you’re thinking of doing—improving yourself by thinking (and eating) outside the box.

Here are some quick guidelines to make the first few days more exciting than daunting:

  • You can do anything for a day. Just think, “Today.” And then another day. And then you can do anything for just 2 weeks. And then hopefully 3 — and so on. It’s not a death sentence and it’s not for the rest of your life. And you shouldn’t be hungry! Just take it a day at a time. Remember: you chose this for yourself. You chose to get healthier once and for all. Once you get past the first couple of days, cravings will subside dramatically then completely evaporate. Your blood sugar will normalize and you will start to have more energy and feel balanced throughout the day.
  • Go shopping for what you need. Ideally, you’ve done some of this already. If not, get on it! You don’t want to be tempted by junk or non-negotiables (like gluten, dairy etc.) in your house because you didn’t take the time to plan. Also, if the cupboard is bare, you will be more tempted to go out for a “quick fix,” and chances are that won’t be ideal. Shop. Stock up on goodness.
  • Don’t skip meals. Let me repeat that: DON’T skip meals. Your body will hold on to fat and start storing things because it’s afraid it’s starving, even if it’s only a 5 or 6 hour gap in nutrition. Have your healthy snacks in between your meals. If you plan and eat— shake, snack, lunch, snack, dinner (or shake) you should not be hungry.
  • Create a mantra for yourself. That might be something like: “I am getting healthier by the day” or “I take good care of myself because I am worth the effort.” Or maybe it’s like this: “I have faith that I can do whatever it takes to feel vibrant and healthy” or “I’m so excited to feel healthy and vibrant.”
  • Take an extra few minutes in the morning — and whenever you hit a rough patch — to repeat your mantra to yourself.

Remember, you’re creating new habits. Habits take about 3 weeks to become really wired in your brain and therefore in your life. Every day and every moment you follow through on taking care of yourself, following the detox protocol, is another moment and day that counts toward a habit change — of having healthy choices be your default!

It really wasn’t that hard after I got the hang of it, and now I feel so much better, I’ll never go back to eating the junk that made me sick again
